Torch-on Felt in Crawley, Horley and All Surrounding Areas

The roofers at Rose Marie Roofing are experienced with flat and pitched roofing and with working with a range of materials. For flat roofs, we offer liquid rubber roofing, EPDM rubber, GRP fibreglass and torch-on felt. On this page, we focus on our torch-on felt roofing services. Bitumen felt is durable and waterproof, and we use a blowtorch to melt multiple layers of felt together, creating a strong, watertight seal. Our roofing company installs this frequently in and around Horley and Crawley as it is a versatile choice that can be used on residential, commercial and industrial buildings.

Torch-Applied Felt Roofs | Our Installation Process

Torch-applied felt roofing comprises of three layers of bitumen-based felt and is designed to be attached and sealed onto roofs to create a professional, water-tight finish. Below, we detail each step of the felt roof installation process:

Layer 1

This is a venting base sheet, a perforated, bitumen-coated fibreglass underlay, normally 2mm-3mm thick. This is loosely laid on the roof deck and contains small holes that allow moisture to escape from below, preventing trapped condensation and extending the roof’s lifespan by mitigating vapour pressure.

Layer 2

Then the underlay is torched onto the base layer, melting bitumen to create a strong, seamless bond with the substrate. This is a 2 mm-3 mm-thick bitumen-coated felt that serves as the primary waterproof barrier and provides structural strength for torch-on felt roofs. This has a smooth finish to prepare for the final layer to be laid on top.

Layer 3

This is a mineral cap sheet, the thickest layer in the process, 4 mm+. The underside of this layer is also heated with a blowtorch until the bitumen melts, allowing it to fuse with the felt beneath. It has a mineral granule finish to protect the bitumen from UV and physical damage.
